Common Hair Care Mistakes That Damage Your Mane

Beautiful hair is our business at Varona Hair Restoration. We love helping patients keep healthy and full manes of hair and restoring hair that has been lost through hair transplantation. What we don’t love is seeing hair unintentionally damaged by common hair care mistakes.

Are you accidentally ruining your hair without knowing it? Learn about some of the most common hair care mistakes and get tips for keeping your luscious locks at their best.

Washing Frequency: Too Much or Not Enough

If you’re a daily hair washer, like many of our patients are, you’re washing it too often. Cleaning your hair more than needed strips away oils and can weaken hair. We’ve also seen infrequent washing cause problems. Oils and dirt can clog pores and lead to scalp irritation. We find that shampooing 3-4 times a week is a good balance for most patients.

Putting Hair Up Too Often

We love a good updo, but your hair may not. Putting the hair up too often strains hair and can actually cause it to fall out or break. This type of hair loss is called traction alopecia and it is very common. Switch up your do often and wear it down when you can. Loose styles are easier on the hair than tight ones. If you start to notice broken hairs or hair loss around the hairline, it could be hairstyle related.

This isn’t only a problem for the ladies. Men with longer styles are at risk for traction alopecia too.

Styling Wet Hair

Wet hair is weaker than dry hair. Brushing or styling before you’re fully dry can lead to breakage and damage. The solution is simple, let your hair dry completely before brushing, combing, or styling.

Heat and wet hair are especially problematic. Don’t use your hot styling tools like a flatiron or curling iron until your hair is fully dried.

Starting Non-Surgical Hair Loss Treatments Too Late

Hair loss is a common problem for both men and women. By the age of 35, two-thirds of American men will experience visible hair loss. This number jumps to 85% of men by the age of 50. Hair loss in women is slightly less common, but still impacts approximately 40% of all women. When hair loss first occurs, we have many treatment options available, including many non-surgical options for hair restoration. These treatments work best in the early stages of hair loss, and are more of a preventative treatment than a restoration option.

We use non-surgical hair restoration treatments in many different ways. Some patients effectively halt hair loss using a treatment alone. Other patients use medications and topical treatments to slow hair loss until they are ready for surgery. These treatments can also be used in conjunction with a surgical FUE or FUT hair transplant or to maintain results after treatment. They always work best when started early. Once hair loss is highly visible, the damage is already done and non-surgical options just don’t work.
